The Impact of Crystal Meth on our Community

Here is how Crystal meth is specifically impacting members of the LGBT+ community.
  • It is causing an increasing number of members to suffer from the consequences of addictive behavior. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health estimated that in 2015 meth use prevalence was more than four times higher among gay men when compared to straight men at 4.1 percent vs .9 percent,
  • Crystal meth usage is linked to riskier behaviors, putting users at higher risk of HIV transmission (Liu et al, 2021).
  • Crystal meth is the most significant risk factor for HIV seroconversion; There is a three to six times greater risk of HIV seroconversion than in those who do not use crystal meth (Davis-Ewart et al, 2023).
  • Crystal meth usage can potentially impact the effectiveness of hormone therapy, particularly in transgender women undergoing hormone therapy (ADF, 2016).
