The LGBT+Community is Vulnerable
Members of the LGBT+ community are at an increased risk for crystal meth addiction. Davis-Ewart and colleagues (2023) state that men who have sex with other men have prevalence rates of crystal meth usage up to twenty times higher than the general population. The LGBT+ community is at an increased risk for crystal meth exposure and these are some other reasons why:
- The LGBT+ community has a long history of discrimination and marginalization. This can lead to feelings of isolation, depression, and anxiety which increase the risk of drug use.
- Members of the LGBT+ often socialize in places where crystal meth is more prevalent, such as bars and clubs.
- Members of the LGBT+ community are often more concerned with body image which can lead to disordered eating and weight loss behaviors all of which can increase the risk of crystal meth use.
- Crystal meth is more prevalent in the rave and club scene which can lead to exposure to crystal meth in the gay community.
- Grindr is a popular dating app for gay men and has been linked to the spread of crystal meth. Users can easily find and meet other users who are interested in crystal meth.
